Ecuadorian Municipalities Receive Key Training to Measure and Reduce GHG Emissions
Quito, Ecuador – August 28, 2024 – Ecuador is advancing local climate action by training 15 local governments to measure, manage, and reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions through the National Municipal Information System (SNIM). This effort, conducted under the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy, was made possible thanks to the of the European Union in Ecuador, in collaboration with WWF Ecuador and the Association of Ecuadorian Municipalities (AME).
The municipalities of Portoviejo, Quito, Loja, Ambato, Montecristi, Guayaquil, Lago Agrio, Latacunga, Manta, Esmeraldas, Sucre, Samborondón, Salinas, Milagro, and Cuenca actively participated in the workshop. The training enabled municipal technical teams to strengthen their capabilities to measure and manage local GHG emissions. This milestone demonstrates how local governments can come together to transform their cities into more resilient and sustainable spaces, significantly contributing to the fight against climate change.
The of the European Union has been crucial to the success of this initiative. Pedro Ponce, Environmental Cooperation Officer at the EU Delegation in Ecuador, emphasized, “It is very positive that municipalities, as entities responsible for managing the territory, carry out greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, as this significantly contributes to the fight against climate change. We thank WWF Ecuador for managing the EU funds for this initiative, which is part of the Global Covenant of Mayors.”
This workshop has not only enhanced the technical skills of the participating municipalities but also fostered collaboration and transparency in local climate management. With the of the European Union, WWF Ecuador, and AME, Ecuador is moving towards a cleaner, more resilient, and equitable future. Climate action begins at the local level, and this training is a clear example of how t work between municipalities, organizations, and the international community can have a significant impact on sustainability.
